My story

Beauty standards are at an all time high

Every women knows the feeling of comparison. But why are young girls feeling more insecure now than ever?

Growing up, being insecure is nothing too un-familar. Every teenage girl goes through it. Feeling comparison to those around you. Like me and many other girls or even women beauty standards are something that is everyones nightmare. Looking in the mirror never feeling good enough. With my generation in specific, the usage of social media cannot be helping with these already existing teen issues. Social media not only influences and persuades young girls but, now young girls and teenagers are exposed to so much more content than ever before. Content that is easily edited or campaign of somesort. Growing up in the social media era i too experienced it growing up. Longing to look like someone else while these edited pictures surfaced my instagram. But now when you look at pre-teens or teenage girls something i have noticed is that these girls are looking older and older as the years to come. There is no longer an awkard stage or finding out who they truly are. Social media has completely taken over the young minds, and carries with them through their life style. some studies to prove that point can be found in the article, https://www.pewresearch.org/internet/2022/08/10/teens-social-media-and-technology-2022/ .

While there’s no issue with liking a trend or wanting to follow it. There just is a major concern with the usage of social media and how it is effecting these young brains. But as i said before these beauty standards are getting to be way out of line. Sometimes i can even catch myself comparing to those who i see online. While being influenced to like something is okay. Young girls like me and to all those out there. There is nothing wrong with finding your own style who you are etc. an excellent article to reference would be https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20190311-how-social-media-affects-body-image

another important concept to be added to the conversation is this informational video by Laura Medley. Medley discusses social media and its affects on young teenagers and social media’s effect on mental health.
